The standout lot in McTear’s Coins & Banknotes Auction came as no surprise to those lucky enough to attend the sale on Tuesday 21 May.
Lot 613 was a very rare collection, or archive, of early banknotes from The Leith Banking Company. Selling for £5100 including fees, the opportunity to buy this fantastic group was unprecedented, with nothing similar appearing at auction in recent memory.
Lot 544, a gold USA coin, proved that gold will not be completely overshadowed, and is still an important presence in these auctions. Selling for £1400, this will make a great addition to the collection of the room bidder who travelled from the west of Scotland to compete in person.
