Hammer highlights

01/05/2019     Furniture & Works of Art

Variety is always an alluring feature of The Works of Art, Medals, Militaria & Furniture Auction at McTear’s, and the last such auction was no exception.

One highlight of the auction was a Sailors Valentine, bearing a B.H. Belgrave Barbados label to the reverse (lot 1605). With a bounty of interest on the view and online, it was no surprise when this pretty piece sold for double high estimate, at £2,200, to a telephone bidder based in England.

An impressive gilded bronze and ivory figure by French artist Louis Sosson (lot 1603) was another lot which attracted competition. Much admired in advance of the auction, this attractive figure eventually sold for a hammer price of £1,800.

As expected, the signed first edition copy of The Second World War Vol I by Winston Churchill (lot 1601) proved particularly popular. Accompanied by the other volumes of The Second World War, this achieved a final hammer price of £2,400, after competition online and on the telephone.
