Hauntingly Beautiful

01/03/2019     Scottish Contemporary Art

In 1982, James Howie’s atmospheric landscapes caught the attention of renowned art critic, Denys Sutton who placed him amongst the finest 25 living painters of the 20th century. Howie was a perfectionist, and was known to spend months scraping off and re-applying glazes to create gorgeously haunting depictions of a wild and untamed Scotland.

His pieces rarely come to auction, and we are delighted to offer for sale this extraordinary example of his work on Sunday 3 March in the next Scottish Contemporary Art Auction (Lot 543, estimate £3000-5000).
