Hornel achieves top hammer price at McTear's!

19/10/2015     Scottish Pictures

The Scottish Pictures Auction on Sunday afternoon delivered a full house and some aggressive bidding
from in the room buyers and over one hundred and fifty "logged in" bidders from all over the UK and
as far distant as the US.

The small but lovely E A Hornel (lot 23) opened at £15,000 and closed at a mighty £23,000. This is the thirteenth
Hornel we've sold in the last twelve months or so and we've consistently generated higher hammer prices
for "like-for-like" pictures than the London and Edinburgh houses.

The Robert Gemmell Hutchison (lot 10) raced to £17,000 and justified our faith in valuing it at £12,000 - 18,000 after
a prominent Edinburgh auction house had lost out on it by insisting on a reserve of no higher than £8,000. The
£3600 achieved for the William Alfred Gibson (lot 18) is the highest hammer price on record anywhere since 2006 (source
artinfo.com) for a work by the artist.

Alexander Jamieson, John Lavery, James W Ferguson and George Leslie Hunter all performed strongly and the sale
results overall demonstrate how buoyant the market currently is for top quality Scottish Pictures at McTear's.
