Lalique leads the way!

The unmissable highlight of The British & Continental Ceramics & Glass Auction on Thursday was an incredible Rene Lalique ‘Formose’ green glass vase.

Much admired in advance of the auction, it was no surprise when this stunning piece - moulded with fish swimming in relief and signed by Rene Lalique to the underside - sold for more than double high estimate.  The lucky buyer, based in Southern England, scored this catch with a winning bid of £5,500.

Glass was certainly the star of the show last week, with a number of impressive pieces achieving top prices. Omaggio a Picasso, a mesmerising Murano glass sculpture by Walter Furlan, was another standout. After interest online and on the telephone, this eventually sold for £1,500, to another bidder based south of the border.

An 18th century wine glass of possible Jacobite significance - a personal favourite of auctioneer (and keen glass enthusiast) James Bruce - was another lot which surpassed estimate. A bidder based in Edinburgh fought off all competition for this little beauty, with the hammer finally falling at £600.
