Monart, putting the fun in fungi!

With a strong showcasing of French and Bohemian art glass in the upcoming British & Continental Ceramics & Glass auction (11 October), it’s always a pleasure to see works representative of Scotland’s own strong tradition for innovative and vibrant glassblowing in the sale.

Such is the case with lot 1337, a beautiful Monart glass ‘Mushroom’ lamp and shade, made circa 1930. The now world-famous Monart glassworks, founded in Perth during the early 20th century, resulted from an unlikely collaboration between Spanish master glassblower Salvador Ysart, and local lassie Isabel Moncrieff. The pairing resulted in a wonderful array of cased glass pieces, works that have more recently been dubbed ‘Scotland’s answer to the French art glass movement.’

Whilst vibrant vases and brilliant bowls can often be seen within the saleroom, a slightly rarer ‘Mushroom’ lamp will be sure to catch the attention of collectors and aesthetes alike. Finished in fresh tones of yellow, green and pink, the lamp is sure to light up any room whether it’s turned on or off!
