Of perpetual interest…

13/12/2018     Watches

There are few watch brands quite as exclusive as Patek Philippe, known for the beauty and complication of their watches. On the wish list of collectors the world over, the company has been manufacturing timepieces in Geneva since 1839. Despite the maker’s highly lauded advertising campaign slogan, ‘you never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation,’ some do appear for sale at auction. In fact the accolade of most valuable watch ever sold at auction is held by a Patek, one that achieved $24 million in 2014.

A particularly rare model to auction is the 5059R, a vintage style watch with very modern complications. Only produced between 1998 and 2006, the model takes inspiration from converted fob watches worn by army officers in WWI, the case is a deep one with a hinged hunter style caseback. It features day, date and leap year apertures along with a retrograde date track. Along with the moonphase dial, the watch is impressive in the amount of information available to the wearer at a glance. Referred to as having a perpetual calendar mechanism, this model one of few such watches to feature a centre sweep seconds hand.

McTear’s are delighted to offer a Patek Philippe 5059R in eighteen-carat rose gold in The Watches Auction on 18 December 2018, it is estimated at £30,000-40,000.
