Potty for Chocolate

For those of you with a sweet tooth, lot 876 in the upcoming Silver Auction (1 February) – a Victorian silver chocolate pot – may be the lot for you.

With hallmarks dating it to 1886, this interesting piece stands as a testament to a period when the sugary confectionary was more often enjoyed in its liquid form.

These pots noticeably differ from those used for tea and coffee in that the handle is commonly found issuing from the body at a 90 degree angle, whilst the top often has a finial which was traditionally part of an opening for a molinet (long swizzle stick), used to keep the chocolate frothed and well blended.

This example is finely decorated and would make a sterling addition to any silver (or confectionary) enthusiast’s collection!
