Royal Worcester Sheep are Best in Show

April’s British & International Ceramics & Glass Auction at McTear’s featured some excellent examples of the best of British ceramics with Wedgwood, Moorcroft and Doulton all performing strongly in the sale. The star of the show, however, was undoubtedly lot 1223, a pair of Royal Worcester ewers which made an impressive £1,800 on Thursday 26 April.

Featuring hand-painted scenes of sheep in wild landscapes on the elegant ovoid bodies complemented by the ram’s head finials to the scrolling handles these lovely ewers caught the attention of both local and international buyers – indeed, after some fierce competition, the highest bidder was an Australia-based collector.

The popularity of the artist Harry Davis is evident in the desirability of these beautiful ewers. The enduring appeal of hand-painted Royal Worcester was also proven with lot 1247, a set of six early 20th century Royal Worcester coffee cups and saucers. Hand-painted by H. Austin with a busy floral pattern and gilt body colour, this striking set fetched a hammer price of £320.
