Splendid sapphires this September at McTear’s

The stunning sapphire is probably the world’s most popular blue gem, and whether it be intense and deep or pale blue in colour, the blue sapphire has an enduring appeal. Of course, whilst the blue sapphire may remain the most celebrated traditionally, the sapphire does come in a rainbow of beautiful colours. Vibrant yellows, oranges and pinks are just a few amongst the array of shades of the sapphire.

Sapphire is the birthstone of September and this month’s Jewellery Auction at McTear’s sports several sapphire sparklers. Sapphire rings have had their share of the spotlight in recent years and, indeed, the Duchess of Cambridge’s gorgeous engagement ring – which was once owned by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana – famously features an impressive blue sapphire within a halo of diamonds.

The appealing pairing of sapphires and diamonds has long proven an attractive combination. Somewhat reminiscent of Her Majesty’s own sapphire cluster, lot 23 is a beautiful sapphire and diamond cluster ring with an auction estimate of £120–180. Another stellar example which truly exhibits the appeal of this dazzling duo, lot 44 is an incredible sapphire and diamond target ring. This lovely ring features an impressive central round sapphire, surrounded by round diamonds, and comes with an attractive auction estimate of £1500–2000.
