26/04/2019     Medals & Militaria, Sporting Medals & Trophies

A jersey worn by St Mirren legend, Tommy Gemmell, during the Club’s Scottish Cup win in 1959 has sold for £7,700 at McTear’s Sporting Medals and Trophies auction in Glasgow.

Also appearing in the auction was Gemmell’s nine carat gold medal from the Buddies 3-1 Scottish Cup win, which was bought for £2,200.

Other lots related to the player included Gemmell’s Scotland top, which sold for £2,400, an inscribed watch that was awarded to the player by J&P Coats to mark the Scottish Cup victory, which was bought for £335, and a 1959 Renfrewshire Cup winner’s medal that sold for £335.

The two Gemmell jerseys, the 1959 Scottish Cup medal and the 1959 Renfrewshire Cup medal were all secured by St Mirren Director Alan Wardrop on behalf of the club.

Commenting on the auction, Brian Clements, McTear’s Managing Director, said:  “This is an incredible archive that paints a fascinating picture of one of St Mirren’s greatest players.  We often see individual medals coming to auction but it is very rare to see so many important pieces related to one player going under the hammer.   There was fierce bidding for the items from across the globe, including a collector from Singapore.

“The 1959 Cup win is a key moment in the history of St Mirren Football Club and I am delighted see these historic items returning to the Club as it celebrates the 60th anniversary of this momentous win.”

The Tommy Gemmell archive was offered at auction on behalf of the family of the late player.

Tommy Gemmell (1930-2004) was an inside forward who played his entire senior career at St Mirren Football Club.   He made over 250 league appearances for the Buddies and was a key member of the team that beat Aberdeen 3-1 in the 1959 Scottish Cup final in front of 108,000 at Hampden.

Gemmell played twice for his country and is one of only two St Mirren players to have scored for Scotland.

Over the years McTear’s has built a market leading reputation in the sale of high profile sporting memorabilia including, in 2016, a gold replica of Celtic’s 1967 European Cup which sold for £58k.

Brian Clements added: “In recent years we have seen more and more highly desirable sporting awards come to auction and our dedicated sale for sporting medals and trophies now attracts international buyers looking for rare items to add to their collections.”
