Asian Art Returns to Glasgow

Following the success of April’s Asian Works of Art Auction, July’s sale continues to offer exceptional Chinese and Japanese artworks in silver, ceramic, bronze, ivory, jade, ink, print and textiles.

Chinese silver tea services feature alongside two interesting ink drawings after Su Renshan. Intricate Japanese ivories and an assortment of around twenty rugs stand out among the 400 or so lots to be brought under the hammer on 2 July.

We are proud to offer two private Scottish collections of Asian art in this auction. These collectors brought together varied and gorgeous assemblages over lifetimes of collecting, their passion for Chinese and Japanese art evident in the lots presented to auction, many for the first time.

One of these collectors was Stirlingshire's George McCourtie. George was introduced to Asian art at an early age by his parents who had themselves gathered a huge collection in their home, including a large gathering of ivories. As he studied and became more and more knowledgeable, George's passion developed into a love of Japanese art and especially woodblock prints, of which he amassed hundreds during his life. George also delighted in Japanese swords; he was an active member of the To-Ken society, which supported the appreciation and preservation of these swords and their fittings. George would travel extensively to exhibitions, events and to meet dealers and fellow enthusiasts, and soon became a ‘go-to’ contact for many who wanted to consult with him, get his opinion on artworks and simply to share interesting finds. Perhaps George shared with others this fine Japanese cloisonne on silver vase or a striking bronze of a tiger attacking a buffalo. As George’s collection begins its next chapter, we at McTear’s feel privileged to present this part of his Underwood House collection to the world.

The second corpus is presented anonymously to the world. The provenance note in the catalogue indicates the lots which form part of this private Scottish collection. We note the variety of artworks and cannot help but appreciate the many Chinese ceramics – a large plaque inset to a table is sure to catch the eye, Chinese bottle shaped vases too. It is our pleasure to bring this collection of Asian art to the market.
