Cameo Coins

Coins serve a purpose of being currency for the world however many are created solely for the purpose of being a form of collectible art.

Many gold coins, such as sovereigns, have been used as legal tender which is the purpose they were initially intended for and this is highlighted in their condition however many other examples are created with such high quality finishes that it would be a crime for these to cross anyone’s palms as legal tender.

Collections: Gold Sets & Coins taking place on 7 April features an array of beautifully crafted and very impressive coins.

From a very unusual high relief portrait of Queen Elizabeth II adorning the obverse of lot 41, a gold proof fifty dollar coin to a gold three hundred dollar coin featuring another beautiful depiction of Her Majesty beneath a round brilliant cut diamond in lot 33.

This auction also included a number of proof coins which are struck for superior quality to create a high shine mirror image by polishing specially etched and prepared dies. Side by side, you will be able to see your reflection in a proof coin whereas a coin that hasn’t been crafted to this standard will appear dull in comparison.

But perhaps two of the most interesting lots are the ultra cameo coin sets featured as lots 84 and 86. These coins are similar to proof coins where they do possess a mirror finish however, they must also have an intense frosting on both sides and highly polished fields which accent the raised designs. To earn and maintain this grade, there is a requirement for there to be consistent and exceptional frosting in the required areas of the coin. In this instance, the Queen’s bust and the depiction of St George and the Dragon are frosted whilst the background features the highly polished finish.

Both lots include five coins ranging from a quarter sovereign up to a quintuple sovereign. Each with beautiful ultra cameo finish, they come presented in a sleek wooden presentation box.

These coins are examples of the collectible art that may not be able to hang upon your wall however you’ll be able to see the delighted reactions of anyone who gazes upon them in their mirror finish!
