What makes collectors tick?

The value of a carriage clock is determined by a number of factors, not least the quality of decoration, the maker’s name and in many cases the all-important repeater mechanism. This example, which sold on August 28 for an impressive £1,500, has it all -  the brilliant ormolu case cast in an attractive gorge form, but most importantly the white enamel dial is signed for the highly esteemed maker Charles Frodsham.

The final feature, which is one you should always look out for when it comes to timepieces, is the repeater mechanism. This small button at the top of the case forces the movement to chime to the hour and minute, and dates from a time before one could easily illuminate the dial. Whilst small in size, the repeater can have a large impact on value, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled for that all important button.
