Crazy for Colour

There is something mysterious and powerful about coloured gemstones and for centuries they have inspired beliefs in their magical powers and captivated the hearts of many with their unmatched beauty.

One of the more popular coloured stones is the sapphire. Most commonly, sapphires are blue and they can range from a very pale to a deep navy colour. They are said to symbolise the tranquillity of heaven and according to the Ancient Romans, protect the wearer from harm and envy. Lot 1392 in the 17 July Jewellery Auction is a unique sapphire and diamond ring. With a central step cut sapphire surrounded by round brilliant cut diamonds and calibre cut sapphires, it comes with an estimate of £2000 - £2500

Another popular gemstone is ruby. The deep red stones are thought to ward off misfortune and ill health. Lot 1382 is a pair of ruby and diamond cluster earrings in the popular cluster setting. Estimated at £1500 - £2000, these ruby earrings have proved to never go out of style.
