Jolomo in June

This June’s Scottish Contemporary Art Auction features four lots by a McTear’s favourite, John Lowrie Morrison—perhaps more recognisable by the moniker Jolomo. Ever-so-popular in the sale room, ten other Jolomo works have already gone under the hammer in 2021 at McTear’s and have received fierce bidding competition. This next round of Jolomos are sure to have a similar result, with pictures in every size, ranging from a canvas size of 76cm x 76cm to 30.5cm x 30.5cm.

The largest of the group, lot 641 Stream Up on Nick’s Tug at Crinan, measuring 76cm x 76cm, boasts a different subject matter than the usual crofts or landscapes that tend to come up at auction, and is undoubtedly the stand-out of the group. The exceptional picture depicts a sizable tugboat in the westerly canal, with deep blue skies and vibrant summer wildflowers along the banks. Another summery scene is a smaller picture, lot 597; Evening Eain, Isle of Gigha, measuring just 30.5cm x 30.5cm. It presents one of Jolomo’s more familiar croft scenes, with greenery softly fluttering in the wind, seaside views and distant peaks.

Wintery themes are present too, with lot 642, Heavy Snowfall Gribun, Mull. As the title may suggest, a cluster of crofts are nestled beneath a heavy blanketing of snow. This picture, at 41cm x 41cm overall is the perfect mid-sized picture to add to your collection. The other winter scene, also depicting Mull, is lot 643, Winter Evening Tobermory, Mull. This time, the focus on winter is more on the waters, looking out to Calve Island amongst the waves, with icy blues and soft yellows used to show the winter sun slowly rising above the horizon. There is no telling what will happen in the room on the day of the sale, but we at McTear’s have high hopes that Jolomo pictures will continue to foster fierce competition, and trust that you will bid accordingly.
