Macallan Private Eye 35th Anniversary

Macallan often features in the headlines for record breaking prices, with old vintages selling for huge sums at auction. Lot 25 in the Rare & Fine Whisky auction takes Macallan and the printed press and combines them into a highly desirable whisky.

The label adorning this bottle was designed by Ralph Steadmen and is to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Private Eye magazine, which was established in 1961. Today remains of one the most popular satirical and current affairs publications in the UK, remaining in print only format refusing to move to online copies.

Over the years the Private Eye, with Ian Hyslop as editor, has been known to poke fun at current events and well know figures in society, but also for it’s in hard hitting investigations and journalism. It is thought to be the case that this has led to Ian Hyslop being the most sued man in English legal history.

The whisky itself is limited to 5,000 bottles and was produced using a number of casks including one from the year the Private Eye was founded, 1961. This bottle cost as little as £36 plus £6.95 postage back in 1996. In the June 18 Rare & Fine whisky auction it is expected to sell for in excess of £2,500.
