The Rarity in a Club

Whilst the overall medal haul between the two Old Firm clubs, as well as McTear’s geographical location, has meant that the vast majority of sporting medals we’ve seen over the years have been from either Celtic or Rangers, often the scarcity of a medal belonging to a team outside those clubs can help it go above and beyond at auction.

One recent instance of this can be seen from our November 2020 auction, when Jimmy McMenemy’s (Partick Thistle) 1921 Scottish Cup medal sold for a whopping £6,300 to one lucky bidder. Going back four years, a Scottish League Championship medal that was awarded to John McMeney of Motherwell (the son of the former player) was snapped up for an impressive £5,500.

Within our upcoming auction (21 May), a number of rare and unusual offerings will find themselves coming under the hammer. One instance is our show stopping Scottish League Championship medal awarded to Tom Robertson of Hearts (lot 1705), this being the second of only four times Hearts have lifted the trophy. Another equally sensational piece is lot 1707, this time a medal dating to when Falkirk lifted the Scottish cup in 1957. The second and most recent time they achieved this feat, this medal was given to then Director Mr. A. Clark. For something closer to home, we have a series of four medals (lots 1701-4 opening the sale that were awarded to George Mitchell, a journeyman player for Greenock Morton.

With many such medals having been scrapped, lost or sold, these really are rare artefacts, and we hope you can join us for what promises to be a very special auction on 21 May.
