JIMMY BOYLE SCULPTURE UP FOR SALE
A rare bronze sculpture by former Glasgow hard man Jimmy Boyle will go under the hammer in the artist’s home town next week.
The 4ft high ‘Boxer and the Princess’ is valued at between £15,000 and £20,000 and is one of several hundred lots in the McTear’s Scottish Contemporary Art Auction on 14th July.
Commenting on the sale, Magda Ketterer from McTear’s said: “Jimmy Boyle is a world renowned sculptor and respected best–selling author. His sculptures invariably sell through the top galleries in America and mainland Europe and it’s been nearly twenty years since the last one appeared at auction in the UK.”
During his time in Glasgow’s Barlinnie Prison, Boyle turned to sculpture and wrote an autobiography ‘A Sense of Freedom’ in 1977. On his release in 1980 he moved to Edinburgh to continue his artistic career. Mr Boyle now lives between France and Morocco with his second wife, British actress, Kate Fenwick.
His international success as a sculptor and author has made Mr Boyle a wealthy man and in 2003 he reportedly sold the rights to his novel, ‘A Stolen Smile’, to Disney for £2.1million.
It is understood that the gallery price for this sculpture would be in excess of £25,000.
Amongst the other lots in the sale will be significant works by top Scottish artists including Jack Vettriano, Peter Howson, John Bellany, Lin Pattullo and Graham McKean.
The McTear’s Scotttish Contemporary Art Auction will take place on Wednesday 14th July at 6pm.
