May’s auction saw competition from bidders in the saleroom, online and on the phone. Highlights included works by Grayson Perry, Peter Howson, Graham McKean, and Gerard Burns, to name but a few. A number of works from the private collection of the late Jan Morrison, proprietor of the Leith Gallery, Edinburgh, performed extremely well, including Jane Cruickshank’s A Closer Look, selling for £1,1000, and James Watt’s Vic 32, Crinan, with a hammer price of £750.
Another recent favourite of The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction has been David Shrigley. True to form, his lithograph, Vibes, attracted strong competition and exceeded the pre-auction estimate of £300-500 to fetch £800 hammer. Following recent saleroom trends, the stand-out lot of the day may have been the untitled gouache by William Gear, fetching £1,400, against an estimate of £400-600, proving that competition remains fierce in this dedicated auction.
The next auction of Scottish Contemporary Art takes place on 20 June, entries are now invited.
