McTear’s was delighted to offer at auction the contents of 19 St Bernard’s Crescent, Edinburgh – The Private Collection of William Mowat-Thomson.

An iconic figure in Scottish dance, Edinburgh-based William Mowat-Thomson was a teacher of dance, drama and yoga and a collector of the most wonderful array of art and antiques. From modest beginnings on Orkney, William achieved success in his working life and from a young age furnished his grand homes in his much-loved Georgian style. When William passed away in 2019, at the age of 86, he had built a collection unrivalled in breadth and vibrancy. A great friend of the late gentleman recalls that those visiting Willliam’s house at St Bernard’s Crescent, Edinburgh, affectionately referred to it as the V&A, being as it was a museum of beautiful objets d’art.
