Huntley & Palmers, modelled in the form of a rectangular casket, decorated with royal coat of arms and floral details, with hinged lid. This is the earliest tin in The Lewis Collection and the first known printed British biscuit tin. It was designed by the noted Victorian designer Owen Jones (1809-1874) for H&P in 1868, the year the firm was granted the right to supply the Royal Household with biscuits (the Royal Warrant being granted in 1884). The method of decoration was transfer printing, a technique patented by Benjamin George George of Hatton Garden, London, in 1861.
