* OSCAR HARRISON CLARK (PITCAIRN ISLANDER b. 1927),
A FLYING FISH, FROM PITCAIRN ISLAND
hand carved wood sculpture, signed and titled
20cm high, 33cm long.
Note: Oscar Harrison Clark was born on Pitcairn Island on June 29, 1927. He was the son of Lincoln Clark and Augusta Ruth Lena Christian. He married Norma Ruth Jacobsen, daughter of Niels Oluf Jacobsen and Inez Warren, on Pitcairn Island. Oscar Clark was the postmaster of Pitcairn Island in 1964 and was a noted wood carver, carrying on the traditions of his seafaring ancestors. Pitcairn Island became known as the location chosen by mutineers from "The Bounty" in 1789. Disaffected crewmen, led by acting-Lieutenant Fletcher Christian seized control of the ship from their captain, William Bligh, and set him and eighteen loyalists adrift in the ship's open launch. Bligh successfully navigated more than 3,500 nautical miles (6,500 km; 4,000 mi) in the launch to reach safety.
