This was the first game of the Intercontinental Cup. Celtic won 1-0, though lost the return leg 2-1 forcing the game to a replay. This replay has since been dubbed 'The Battle of Montevideo', a game marred by violent conduct. Six red cards were awarded including one for Auld in the 88th minute, though he refused to leave the pitch.
