Note: Born Dysart, Fife. Studied in Paris under Gerome and Carolus Duran. In Paris, he met William Stott of Oldham whose style, based upon that of Bastien-Lepage, greatly influenced Dow. He painted at Grez-sur-Loing, the French village where many artists worked including Lavery, Roche, Kennedy, Stott and Irish artist Frank O'Meara. Back in Scotland, Dow was associated with The Glasgow Boys. In 1895 he settled in St Ives. He was a gifted flower painter and his pastels show the influences of Whistler and Stott. Died St Ives.
