Note: As per additional information, 'Sasha', born Alex Stewart (1892-1953) in Scotland, became a professional photographer in 1914. He soon became a fashionable photographer with a studio in Pall Mall in the heart of London's West End and his pictures appeared in the society magazines. He is best known for his portraiture of the leading figures of the 1920s and 30s, particularly his work for film companies which included a fine portrrait of Vivien Leigh and another of the Astaires.
You can see his work in the Hulton Getty library, where a search of 'Sasha' brings up around 4000 pictures showing a wide range of work as well as the show-biz pictures...'
'Though his main body of work only spanned 16 years between 1924 and 1940, he shot some of the most memorable stage images ever taken. ...
Sasha developed a great love and appreciation for London's theatre and society scene and from 1926 his work centred around opening nights, society balls and related upmarket events. During his time he shot some of the greatest theatre stars this country has known - John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Noel Coward, Gertrude Laurence and Peggy Ashcroft to name but a few. Many of his subjects, at that time, were the rising stars during a golden age of London stage production which make Sasha's images all the more fascinating.'
Further to this, he was a pioneer of flash photography, the 'Sashalite' bulb being named after him and his part in it's design.
In short, these albums form an intimate representation of the life an important society photographer from the roaring 20s.
