Alexander Lumsden, 8th Seaforth Highlanders, was killed in action on 25th September. The writer says that Pte. Lumsden and himself were advancing together in the attack around Hill 70, when they had to lie down to escape the hail of bullets. "Sandy," he says, "went about five yards more than I, when he was struck by a bullet. He gave just two moans. A comrade asked him further down the line if he was much hurt but got no reply. As it was our time to retire, I had to leave my dear old chum lying dead." Private Lumsden, who was 40 years of age, was a native of Slamannan, but stayed with his sister at Craigfoot Terrace for 2 1/2 years before he enlisted in December last. He was employed at No. 2 Grange pit.'
