FELIX MOSCHELES (BRITISH 1833 - 1917), PAUL AND FLORENCE DOMBEY oil on canvas, signed and dated 1866 110cm x 125cm Framed Note: Exhibited RA 1866. The subject of the painting is taken from Charles Dickens' 'Dombey and Son': 'They would prop him up with cushions in a corner of his bed, and there he would recline the while she lay beside him.' Felix Stone Moscheles was the only son of a prominent Jewish family. His father the renowned composer and musician, Ignasz Moscheles, his mother the acclaimed artist Margaret Moscheles. He was named after his godfather, Felix Mendelssohn. He inherited the many talents of his parents but principally chose to express himself in the medium of art, exhibiting throughout Europe. In addition, he was a major figure in the peace movement and became President of the International Arbitration and Peace Association, becoming a Nobel Peace Prize nominee in 1917. His work is held in numerous national collections but rarely appears at auction and never before of this size and quality. The original exhibition frame is also available if desired.
