RARE AND EARLY - DAVID ALLAN OF QUEEN'S PARK, HIS SCOTTISH CUP WINNERS GOLD MEDAL, 1880-81

SCOTTISH CUP WINNERS GOLD MEDAL, 1880-81,
awarded to David Allan of Queen's Park F.C., the obverse inscribed 'SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP 1880-81', the reverse inscribed 'WON BY Queen's Park Club 1880-81 D. ALLAN', indistinct maker's stamp, 4.1cm high including bale, approx. 3.8g

Note: This rare and early medal predates the official Scottish League system by nearly ten years. It was the eighth such Scottish Cup competition, and was contested by defending champions, Queen's Park, and Dumbarton. Whilst the first match was declared void (despite the Spiders being 2-1 up), the team won the replay in historic fashion, a first cup final hatrick from Dr. John Smith securing a 3-1 victory. This was the 5th of what would become ten Scottish Cup victories for Queen's Park, the third all-time record. This medal was awarded to David Steele Allan (1863–1930), who would also represent the national team on 3 occasions, scoring 2 goals.

Allan was born in Irvine, North Ayrshire and started playing at Ayr Academy, before moving to Glasgow to begin his career as a stockbroker. He joined Queen's Park in 1880, with whome he would win four Scottish Cups in 1881, 1884, 1886 and 1890, also playing in the club's FA Cup finals of 1884 and 1885. He also played occasionally for London-based club Corinthians.
