JAMES SOMERVILLE OF AIRDRIEONIANS F.C., SCOTTISH CUP WINNERS GOLD MEDAL
1923/24

the obverse inscribed SCOTTISH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION in blue enamel around central oval depicting a lion rampant motif in relief, beneath a thistle motif, the reverse inscribed Scottish Cup WON BY Airdrieonians F.C. J. SOMERVILLE 1923.24, in nine carat gold

Note: This rare and important medal comes from Airdrieonians one and only Scottish Cup triumph. They defeated Hibs 2-0 in the final, played at Ibrox in front of 59,218 fans. Another medal from that match was sold by McTear's in March 2025 for £4500 (hammer). This medal has impeccable provenance, being sold on the instructions of the player's granddaughter.

James Somerville was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside left, most prominently for Airdrieonians, where he won the Scottish Cup in 1924 and was an important member of the team as they finished runners-up in the Scottish Football League in four successive seasons. He also played for all three of his local senior clubs: Falkirk, East Stirlingshire and Stenhousemuir.
