Note: The Duke of Clarence, known as the 'Sailor King' or "Sailor Bill" entered the Navy in 1779, attained the rank of Captain in 1786 and was best man at Nelson's wedding in 1787. The Duke of Clarence went on to become King William IV of England and during his short reign, among many achievements, championed the abolishment of slavery. William was survived by 10 illegitimate children to his mistress, Dorothea Jordan an Irish actress and was eventually succeeded by his niece, Queen Victoria.
