GLASGOW CIVIC INTEREST - SILVER PRESENATION BOWL,
maker Henry Matthews, Birmingham 1910, the scalloped circular bowl with scroll and shell border, band detail and presentation inscription '...TO BAILLIE GIBSON PARTICK By the Officials of the BURGH as a token of their appreceiation of his efforts on their behalf in connection with the GLASGOW BOUNDARIES ACT, 1912', on a domed foot, 17.5cm diameter, 413g
Note: Prior to the Boundaries Act of 1912, burghs including Partick, Govan and Pollokshaws were independent of Glasgow. Whilst annexation meant economic sense to many businessmen within the city, the burgh's working class populations wished to maintain their own civic identity, many staging anti-amalgamation protests. Eventually, the Glasgow Corporation would buy many of these workers off through the promise of cheaper energy rates, ushering in the 1912 Act and the geographical City of Glasgow as we know it.
