* JAMES SPENCE RGI, RSW (1929 - 2016), COCK FIGHT watercolour and acrylic on board, signed 30.5cm x 42.5cm Framed and under glass. Note: Jim attended Glasgow School of Art in the 1950's and was taught by Donaldson, Squires, William and Mary Armour and Benno Schotz. With his wife Anda (Paterson), he then spent the summers of 1956 and 57 studying at Hospitalfield House School of Art in Arbroath, where he was tutored by Mclauchan Milne, whose knowledge of Scottish artists Peploe, Cadell, and Fergusson was considerable. While there, James Spence and Anda realised how uneasy they were with the art scene in Glasgow and with James Morrison, founded the young Glasgow Group, which consisted of 13 like-minded artists, friends and fellow students. He won the BBC Award, the National Bockingford Award, the Royal Physicians and Surgeons Award and the Scottish Amicable Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute, the William Bowie Award, and the John Gray Award. James Spence's work is displayed n The Queen's Collection as well as galleries in Glasgow and Dundee, Bilbao and the New York Mccabe collection.
