DALMALLY BURN WITH BEN CRUACHAN IN THE DISTANCE, AN OIL BY GEORGE HOUSTON

GEORGE HOUSTON RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1869 - 1947),
DALMALLY BURN, WITH BEN CRUACHAN IN THE DISTANCE
oil on canvas, signed
41cm x 51cm
Framed.
Partial label verso: James McClure & Son.
Note: Dalmally is a beautiful village in Argyll & Bute, approximately 45 miles north west of Glasgow. The area was a great favourite of George Houston's and is just a few miles north of Cuil House, Cairndow. Cuil House is situated close to the head of Loch Fyne and enjoys an elevated position with a south westerly outlook over Loch Fyne towards Glen Kinglas and the policies of Ardkinglas House. In July 1914 Houston took out a lease on Cuil House from the then owner Sir Andrew Noble of Ardkinglas and it remained his second home for the rest of his life. By all accounts, George Houston loved painting in Argyll and he and his family spent a substantial part of every year at Cuil House. Houston exhibited widely and with great success. The Royal Scottish Academy hung over one hundred of his paintings and prominent Scottish public collections hold forty-nine examples of his work.
