ELECTROPLATED 'MISS CRANSTON'S' PRESERVE SPOON designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, trefoil terminal, with circular bowl, reverse of stem stamped 'MISS CRANSTON'S', 16cm long Provenance: Found in a private home in Helensburgh Literature: Judy Rudoe `Decorative Arts 1850-1950, A Catalogue of the British Museum Collection`, page 211, plate 66 for illustration of an extremely similar preserve spoon designed c1905 for Miss Cranston`s Tearooms in Glasgow. Note: At the end of 19th century, Glasgow was thriving with artistic innovation. In 1896-7 Miss Catherine Cranston opened her third tearoom on Buchanan street. As well as serving as a gallery for paintings by the Glasgow Boys, Miss Cranston was also a champion of the young designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. This spoon is one of the many items designed by Mackintosh for Miss Cranston and her four tearooms from 1896-1917.
