Note: William Sinclair Gauldie CBE was a leading figure in post war Scottish Architecture. He was also a successful and widely exhibited artist. He was a founding member of the Scottish Society of Architect-Artists. He also published various books, contributed to numerous professional journals, wrote the script for BBC programmes and made radio and television appearances. "It's Getting Late Gentlemen" celebrates the "business lunch" culture which was enjoyed by so many, for so long. Invariably, such lunches were of substantial duration and often "gentlemen only". Participants appreciated good food and fine wines, usually followed by appropriate volumes of malt whisky or brandy. The single most significant ingredient was "good company" and many excellent business relationships were made and strengthened by regular business lunches. These events were as popular with those who enjoyed them as they were unpopular with their spouses. Already on the decline after the 2008 banking crisis and world recession which brought expense accounts under closer scrutiny, the 2020/21 pandemic forced the closure (temporarily) of all suitable venues. For many, the business lunch was a vital release valve from the pressures of business life. For others, they were simply great fun and an opportunity to relax and unwind with friends and colleagues.

A condition report is offered as an indication of any issues visible to the naked eye. As none of our staff is a professional conservator or restorer, buyers must satisfy themselves in respect of condition and McTear’s can provide contact details of local professionals who can provide fully comprehensive expert reports, usually for a modest charge. The condition report does not form part of any contract between McTear's and the buyer, and all lots are offered "as is" in accordance with our Terms of Business available on our website.
