Mounted, framed and under glass.
Label verso: The Stone Gallery, St Mary's Place, Newcastle Upon Tyne. Catalogue number 42 and Stock No NC627. Purchaser inscribed on label as L.S. Lowry Esq.
Exhibited: Newcastle Upon Tyne, The Stone Gallery, "Norman Cornish". 22nd February - 21st March, 1964 (catalogues scans in additional images).
Authentication: We are grateful to the Cornish family for authenticating this picture and for confirming that "Gantry" was one of the two documented purchases by L.S. Lowry. "The piece was advertised at 30 Guineas in 1964. Quite an investment, it seems.”
Provenance: Deceased estate. From a substantial Scottish private collection of 20th century British art.
Note: The Bowes Museum (Barnard Castle) is currently staging "Norman Cornish, The Definitive Collection" a major retrospective celebrating the centenary of the acclaimed County Durham artist’s work which opened on 16th November 2019, almost 100 years to the day of his birth in Spennymoor. The success and popularity of this exhibition has resulted in it being extended until 17th January 2021.
