* PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b. 1958),
THE NIGHT CABIN
oil on canvas, signed
image size 180cm x 120cm (70.86 x 47.24 inches), overall size 195cm x 135cm
Note: This very large and impressive painting was a private commission from "around 1980". The commission was inspired by Howson's "The Cabin" but the owner wanted a much larger picture. "The Cabin" was a substantial 90cm x 60cm oil on canvas but "The Night Cabin" is almost exactly four times the size."The Cabin" was later sold by Sotheby's (Bond Street, London) on 1st September 2004, lot 810. "The Night Cabin" has been a much loved painting for many years but the only owner recently downsized and no longer has a suitable location for such a large painting. We are grateful to Peter Howson OBE for authenticating this work. Since "The Night Cabin" arrived at our premises numerous viewers have suggested that the work has strong, but unintended, "lockdown" connotations. Peter Howson is one of Britain's best known and valuable contemporary artists. Howson's work is often controversial, complex, instantly recognisable and, at his best, simply brilliant. He is one of very few living British artists who's larger works command gallery prices of £100,000 or more and has long been collected by a host of well known celebrities from the UK and the US.
