The collection of compacts coming up for sale at McTear’s this January may be ‘compact’ by name, but not by nature... An incredibly expansive - and really rather impressive - collection of compacts is one unmissable highlight of The Works of Art, Medals, Militaria & Furniture Auction taking place 21 January.
Comprising an astonishing total of over 650 compacts, these are offered over 52 lots in this month’s sale. The first of the compacts to go under the hammer in this auction, lot 1701, really is one to watch. This stunning sterling silver compact is by acclaimed Danish designer Georg Jensen. The perfectly simplistic square design is set of with a single stylised flowerhead, and the exterior of the back bears a charming engraving that reads ‘Wendy from Peter Pan, New York 1950’. This is offered with an estimate of £100-150.
A number of lovely silver compacts are included within this vast collection, by esteemed makers such as Asprey & Co (lot 1702) and Tiffany & Co (lot 1709). A silver, gold and sapphire compact by Cartier is another that shouldn’t be missed (lot 1704).
With over 650 compacts in this auction, in a true array of shapes, styles and designs, you may struggle to choose just one favourite.
