Looking to acquire an exceptional piece of Asian art? One standout piece at the next Asian Works of Art Auction is lot 1071, a beautiful batik painting by Chuah Thean Teng (1914-2008). Teng was born in China and moved to Malaysia with his parents at the age of seventeen. After developing his artistic talents in the realms of oil and watercolour, the artist endeavoured to combine these skills with his mastery as a batik maker. Batik cloth has long been made for dress across South East Asia, fashioned in a style recognised internationally as the sarong. Teng’s experimental foray into cloth painting has ultimately led him to become a Malaysian art icon, coined the “Father of Batik Painting".

The Yahong Art Gallery, in Batu Ferringhi, Penang Island, Malaysia, is home to a large selection of work by Chuah Thean Teng. The Gallery is useful as a resource on the artist, and on the process of batik painting, and describes how Teng ‘transformed the ancient craft of batik into a fine art form.’

Lot 1071 in the Asian Works of Art Auction on 1 February is a magnificent batik painting by the father of batik painting himself, being offered at £2,000 – £3,000. Purchased from Yahong Art Gallery by the vendor in 1989, this captivating painting shows a seated woman and three children, and is an outstanding example of the delicate portrayals of motherly love for which Chuah Thean Teng is best known.

This magnificent painting by Chuah Thean Teng is sure to attract attention from admirers of Asian Art worldwide. Definitely one to watch at the Asian Works of Art Auction this Thursday!
