A United States Merchant Marine Distinguished Service Medal was just one of the military medals which sailed straight past high estimate at The Works of Art, Medals, Militaria & Furniture Auction on Friday 11 October.
Eventually selling for some twenty times the auction estimate, the Distinguished Service Medal, awarded to Merchant Marine Alexander Henry, was certainly a standout of the auction. Accompanied by another medal and with related papers, the lot attracted interest from collectors both locally and internationally, eventually selling to a buyer based in North West England, for £1,900.
This wasn’t the only military medal to exceed estimate on Friday. An interesting WWII archive relating to Wladislaw Siewierntocha – including his Polish and his Allied medals – was offered at lot 1540.
After bidding in the room, online and on the telephone, the hammer eventually fell at £1,700. Another WWII archive, this relating to Chief Engineer Officer Alexander George MacLeay, Esq. O.B.E. (lot 1651), sold for £300.
