Check mate!

The seller of a rather special chess set was surely seeing gold (or silver!) earlier this month at The Silver Auction. The fantastically formed set by Cyril Endfield of London with silver and silver gilt pieces which slot together to create handsome towers of players – certainly attracted interest at the specialist sale.

This brilliant set is an example of the official commemorative chess set for the 1972 chess match between the American player Bobby Fischer and the Russian Boris Spassky. The splendid chess set evidently caught the eye of more than one collector at McTear’s dedicated, international Silver Auction on 8 April, eventually selling to a buyer based in Germany for a hammer price of £1,000.
