Clusters of joy

The cluster ring has been a staple in jewellery fashions for hundreds of years. Gaining real popularity in the early nineteenth century, the most recent peak is perhaps in the late twentieth century. Most frequently seen at auction is the sapphire and diamond cluster ring featuring an oval faceted sapphire within a border of round brilliant cut diamonds. Princess Diana’s engagement ring is a famous example of this format and a version of this design can be found available in most high street jewellers today.

A flattering and practical way of setting coloured gems and diamonds together, examples set with emeralds and rubies are popular too. Those set with smaller diamonds alone, in large quantities, are also well-received but can be a little less sought after today. Lots 508, 509, 551 and 584 are all cluster rings in the auction on Wednesday 18 July, with estimates ranging from £40 to £180.
