The cross is a well-known symbol of Christianity however the symbol itself predates the introduction of the religion and is thought to have first been appeared in pre-Christian times as part of nature worship.

The symbol has been widely interpreted with theories including one that it may have represented the tool used to kindle a fire and therefore may be a symbol of the sacred fire; a symbol of the sun to represent its daily rotation. Today it is most commonly worn as a token of protection by Chrisitians.

Over the years, the cross has evolved to include many stylistic versions of the simple design. In the 18 July Jewellery Auction, there are multiple cross pendants in various styles to suit every taste. Lot 521, for example, is an eighteen carat gold pave set diamond cross set with round brilliant cut diamonds. Estimated at £550 – £750.
