Dunoon Seller Coins it in at Auction

A seller from Dunoon is in the money after his collection of rare silver dollars and commemorative US coins sold for £2,100 - more than five times their original estimate.

The items, which were split into two lots in McTear’s recent Coins and Banknotes Auction, included seven cased Carson City Silver Dollars, complete with certificates, and 19 uncirculated silver dollars in presentation envelopes. A 1996 United States Mint Premier Silver Proof Set attracted particular interest from collectors.

Commenting on the auction, Sarah Fergusson from McTear’s, said: “The last few years has seen a surge in interest in rare coins and banknotes.  These are particularly good examples and when the auction started it was clear there were a few potential buyers eager to get their hands on the silver dollars.

“Following fierce bidding both lots eventually sold to Scottish collectors.  Needless to say the anonymous seller from Dunoon was delighted with the end result.

“Very often the owners of old coins and banknotes do not realise how valuable they are so we would certainly recommend having a look in those old boxes in the loft or the back of the cupboard for anything that looks a little bit unusual.  You just never know, you may be the one coining it in at the next auction.”
