French glass takes centre stage

Whether you’re devoted to Daum, or a lover of Lalique, there’s fine French glass ware to suit every taste and budget in the upcoming British & Continental Ceramics & Glass Auction at McTear’s. Including thirty lots of Lalique and comprising over 220 lots in total (!) this auction really is not one to be missed. Our Specialists talk us through some favourites in this rather special sale...

 LALIQUE 'REINE MARGUERITE' CARAFE

This stunning decanter or carafe was designed in 1913, and comes complete with a silver stopper designed by Rene Lalique.  A real sight to behold, this attractive piece is offered at lot 1099 with an auction estimate of £800-1200.

 LALIQUE RONCES VASE

This stunning blue Lalique ‘Ronces’ vase in electric blue is a statement piece which immediately catches the eye. A design dating from 1921, the French name ‘Ronces’ translates as ‘brambles’ in English, and as such, it will come as no surprise that this beautiful vase is extensively decorated with swirling thorny branches. This is offered at lot 1068 with an auction estimate of £3000-5000.

LALIQUE SERPENT VASE

A striking piece which has turned heads since arriving at McTear’s Glasgow Galleries, the Lalique ‘Serpent’ vase, is as stunning as it is captivating. Modelled realistically as a serpent, this brilliant design – dating from 1924 – is executed in purple glass to fantastic dramatic effect. Limited edition of just 888, this fantastic piece of Lalique is included at lot 1073, estimated at £1000-1500.

 LALIQUE COURLIS VASE

This beautiful vase dates from post-war, though was originally designed in 1931. This charming design, in frosted green glass, features a flock of flying ducks. Lot 1067 in the forthcoming sale, this is estimated at £500-800.

 DAUM CAMEO GLASS VASE

Of the seven handsome lots of Daum glass in this auction, one is of special interest in a Scottish sale! Lot 1096 features a bonnie Daum cameo glass vase, decorated with attractive thistle sprays. In shades of red and gold which emulate the finest of Scottish summer sunsets, this vase really is a little beauty. This comes with an auction estimate of £500-800.

GALLE CAMEO GLASS VASE

Gallé is another fine feature of this sale, with fifteen fine Gallé pieces within the upcoming auction. This splendid slender glass vase – beautifully decorated with flowers and leaves – is a lovely example of the fine cameo glass for which Émile Gallé is so admired. This features at lot 1107, estimated at £200-400.
