Gerard Burns : A Titan in Scottish Portraiture

Born in Glasgow in 1961 and graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1983, Gerard Burns has become one of the most recognisable names in Scottish Contemporary Art.

The detail and accuracy in his canvases are assisted by closeness and intimacy, as most models are his family, friends and neighbours. Speaking on his own style and art, Burns says '‘I am attempting to reclaim a more traditional approach to painting….my goal is realism, but it’s by increasingly abstract means that realism is attained'. Burns is known for his large scale portraits, each heavy with symbolism and a sense of familiarity.

This November's Scottish Contemporary Art Auction features 10 spectacular paintings by the Glaswegian artist, including extraordinarily large canvases alongside pictures of more usual dimensions covering a range of subjects from girls with Saltires to an immaculate still life.
