Glengoyne | A Superb Single Vendor Collection

The picturesque Glengoyne distillery, nestled at the foot of the Campsie Fells, straddles the border between the Highland and Lowland whisky regions.

The stillhouse sits to the north of the divide, whereas the warehouses that are home to the slumbering casks are over the road in the Lowlands. Despite this slight regional ambiguity, Glengoyne is classified as a Highland distillery and its sweet, fruity, spirit certainly feels more in keeping with typical Highland characteristics, particularly when aged in their preferred sherry casks.

Glengoyne’s approachable style has helped it achieve considerable success since it first appeared on the single malt scene, and recent investment in the visitor centre by current owners, Ian MacLeod Distillers, has seen it become extremely popular with whisky tourists, further enhancing the reputation of the brand. If the distillery hasn’t been on your radar, now could be the perfect time to remedy that with this month’s auction featuring many of Glengoyne’s greatest hits, such as several batches of the popular Teapot Dram, and many of the sought-after single cask releases selected by the distillery’s staff members.

Perhaps the most eye-catching of these is a 1967 vintage single cask release, bottled in 2005 at 37 years of age (lot 70, estimate £1000 to £1500). Matured in a single Sherry Butt that yielded just 246 bottles, this sensational whisky was awarded a score of 93/100 by Serge Valentin of WhiskyFun.com and might be one of the most collectable drams produced by the distillery. With so many great Glengoynes to choose from this month, there’s never been a better time to discover (or re-discover) the whisky from “the valley of the wild geese”.
