Hitting the high notes

Lot 33, a fine early 20th century Italian violin, surpassed its estimate of £300-500 in the saleroom during The Clocks, Scientific and Musical Instruments Auction, held 8th December. Bearing the label 'Liuteria Classica Napoletana diretta dal Prof. Raffaele Calace e Figlio (Italia) 1930 Napoli' and with a curled two-piece back, this instrument attracted bids online and in the room to reach the hammer price of £800. Musical instruments continued to prove popular on the day, with lot 79., a Wheatstone & Co of London concertina, achieving £1200 hammer.
