Love & war

McTear’s final jewellery auction of the year provided a few interesting top-selling lots. Lot 316 was a late Victorian mourning ring that was later dedicated to a soldier lost in WWI.

Engraved to the interior with 'D. McL. Wounded & Missing. Somme. 1/7/16,’ this ring presented a very rare opportunity to own something of historical importance with a touching human element. It sold for nearly £1300 including fees – a staggering 23 times its pre-sale lower estimate – to an online bidder based in the south of England.

As you might expect in the run-up to Christmas, several diamond solitaire rings sold very well. Lot 17 was set with a round brilliant cut diamond of approximately 2.90 carats and made £6500.

This was closely followed by lot 20A which made £7700 and lot 220 which went at £4900.

Both sold to bidders in the saleroom. The power of a lab certificate was again proven with lot 100A, a natural sapphire bracelet making £3200 and going to an online England-based buyer.

Of local interest was lot 43, an impressive diamond brooch by Eric N. Smith. A well-known Glasgow jeweller, Smith created the piece as an entry to a competition in recent years. This faced competition from a room bidder and online but eventually sold to a buyer on the telephone.
